San Jose Taiko, Cartagena, and Denevan
Spark goes backstage with San Jose Taiko on the verge of their 35th anniversary. The group's unique style of Japanese drumming infuses traditional rhythms with world beats from Africa to Bali to Brazil. Then we visit the studio of Victor Cartagena, whose violent childhood in war-torn El Salvador has driven him to create a haunting body of work with powerful, and very personal, political statements. Finally, we watch as Jim Denevan carves enormous, ephemeral sand drawings on the beaches along the Northern California coast.

    Great Performances[#3313H]
    Cyrano de Bergerac
One of the most beloved plays, Cyrano de Bergerac also offers one of the theater's most coveted roles for a leading actor. Based on the life of a 17th century warrior poet, Edmond Rostand's romantic classic tells the tale of Cyrano - a gifted writer, musician and peerless duelist, yet hopelessly handicapped in the romantic arena by his unusually large nose. Desperately in love with the beautiful Roxane, he offers his poetic brilliance to Christian, his similarly smitten yet tongue-tied comrade. The unwitting Roxane falls for Cyrano's passionate words as delivered by Christian's handsome face, only to learn of the deception many years too late. Recorded in 2008 at the end of a limited run - the play's first return to Broadway since 1984 - the Oscar and Tony winning Kevin Kline triumphs in the title role with a critically-acclaimed, bravura performance. Also starring are Jennifer Garner (Alias) as Roxane and Daniel Sunjata (Broadway's Take Me Out, FX's Rescue Me) as Christian; David Leveaux (Moon for the Misbegotten; Nine) directs.

    Torturing Democracy
This documentary chronicles how US detention and interrogation policies in the Administration's war on terror descended into "at a minimum, cruel and unusual treatment and, at worst, torture" in the words of the former general counsel of the United States Navy. It features high-level State Department and Pentagon insiders - military men who opposed the increasingly harsh treatment of men in US custody. One Marine Lt. Colonel, assigned to prosecute a so-called "high value" detainee, refused to do so when he concluded that the prisoner's confession was coerced through torture. Calling that interrogation "morally repugnant," this military officer told producer Sherry Jones, "If we compromise our ideals as a nation, then these guys have accomplished much more than driving airplanes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon."
For the first time on television, the former chief Judge Advocate General of the Army reveals the inside story of how the top military lawyers in a Pentagon task force set up by the Secretary of Defense in early 2003 were deceived by Rumsfeld's secret authorization of interrogation tactics they had opposed. "The commander in chief doesn't have the power to make that which is illegal under the law of war, legal," the former top JAG concludes. This program details the fierce struggles waged by these military and administration insiders - whose belief in the country's traditions and values led them to the highest acts of patriotism. They were unable, in the end, to overcome formidable resistance from the most powerful figures in the Pentagon and the White House.

    So Long Solo/Hand's Together
So Long Solo - Zak and Wheezie are eager to prep their performances in the rapidly approaching Twilight Talent Show. But Zak, consumed by trying to find a Jugglebug to participate in his act, must endure Wheezie wildly practicing for her trumpet solo. The two soon discover that they can not do both at the same time. Wheezie's loud trumpet playing scares away Zak's jugglebugs and Zak's search for a juggle bug prevents Wheezie from practicing her trumpet. Eventually they compromise and agree to take turns. Wheezie holds off playing her trumpet while Zak successfully lures a jugglebug into his juggle gym. Then, with the little juggle bug safe and at peace under the " Alone Cone," Wheezie lets loose on her trumpet! With both acts perfected, Zak & Wheezie perform that night in a display of talent and collaboration.

Dean Martin - The One & Only
He was a beloved American icon - the coolest, the most debonair, the smoothest entertainer of the 1960s and 70s. This special is a loving and moving tribute to one of the most admired and multi-talented performers the world has ever known. While one of America's top vocalists, Dino was also an accomplished, serious film actor, appearing in The Young Lions, Toys In The Attic, Some Came Running, Rio Bravo, and many others. And with his Martin & Lewis comedy background, he was also adept at light comedy in films like Ocean's Eleven, What A Way To Go, and Ten Thousand Bedrooms. At the same time, Dean's NBC variety hour, The Dean Martin Show, ran for 9 highly-rated years and spawned his equally well-watched Celebrity Roast specials.
The program takes us through his entire life and career, from growing up in Steubenville, Ohio (where he was born Dino Paul Crochetti) through his early days as first a boxer, and then a handsome young crooner, then his teaming with comedian Jerry Lewis in movies, television, and on stage. The breakup of Martin & Lewis was followed by Dean's growth as a huge record seller and movie star, followed by his teaming with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop in the legendary Rat Pack of movies and the Las Vegas stage. The film features performance clips from Martin & Lewis' comedy career, and we also see their live television reunion, after many years of not speaking to each other. Interview segments include Dean himself, Jerry Lewis, Dean's wife Jeannie and daughter Deana, his producer Greg Garrison, and William Schoell, his biographer.

Rat Pack: A Conference of Cool
For a glittering 5-year period Frank Sinatra and a group of Hollywood stars became the bad boys of fame - and the unofficial rulers of American society. They christened themselves the Rat Pack. Each member, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop and Sinatra, was already a star in his own right. Together they were unassailable. Whether performing on stage in the lounges of Las Vegas or acting the fool on the set of movies such as Ocean's Eleven, the Rat Pack became a byword for all that was good and much that was bad about 1950s America. This program shows the heyday of the Rat Pack, from the parties with John F. Kennedy to the intrigues with the sinister forces of the Mafia. Hollywood stars Angie Dickinson and Janet Leigh and music great Buddy Greco are just some of the interviewees who talk about the fun, the fame and the frenzy of the golden years of America's first incarnation of "men behaving badly"!

    Killer Waves / Rescue
From Hawaii's unsurpassed surf, to South Africa's ferocious coastline, "Killer Waves" takes viewers across the world to explore the treacherous boundary between oceans and land. In the shark-infested waters off the coast of Maui, wind surfers risk their lives to ride the world's largest breakers - immense walls of water that crash with the thunder of a sonic boom. On the aptly named Cape Disappointment off the Pacific coast, where ships can be literally torn apart by the surf, young U. S. Coast Guard students are put to the test in deadly waves. In China, villagers in small fishing boats are challenged daily by the Black Dragon, a terrifying, 20-foot-tall tidal bore that roars upriver backed by the force of the entire ocean. A cruise ship sinks rapidly in the tumultuous waters off the coast of South Africa. Realizing that the captain and crew have abandoned the vessel, the ship's entertainers take over - and film - the dramatic rescue of the passengers.

    Frontline[#2408]
    Sex Slaves
An estimated half-million women are trafficked annually for the purpose of sexual slavery. The women are kidnapped -- or lured by traffickers who prey on their dreams of employment abroad -- then they are "exported" to Europe, the Middle East, the United States and elsewhere, where they are sold to pimps, drugged, terrorized, locked in brothels and raped repeatedly. In Eastern Europe, since the fall of communism, sex trafficking has become the fastest growing form of organized crime, with Moldova and Ukraine widely seen as the centers of the global trade in women and girls. Frontline presents a unique hidden camera look at this world of sexual slavery, talking with traffickers and their victims, and exposing the government indifference that allows the abuses to continue virtually unchecked. "Sex Slaves" also follows the remarkable journey of one man determined to find his trafficked wife by posing as a trafficker himself to buy back her freedom.
