    American Experience[#1912Z]
    Summer of Love
In the summer of 1967, thousands of young people from across the country flocked to San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district to join in the hippie experience, only to discover that what they had come for was already disappearing. By 1968 , the celebration of free love, music and an alternative lifestyle had descended into a maelstrom of drug abuse, broken dreams and occasional violence. Through interviews with a broad range of individuals who lived through the summer of love - police officers walking the beat, teenage runaways who left home without looking back and non-hipped residents who resented the invasions - the program offers a complex portrait of the notorious event that many consider the peak of the 1960s counter-culture movement.

    THIS WEEK in Northern California[#2009]
    * Global Climate Change Summit: Craig Miller, KQED Radio
President-elect Obama electrified more than 700 experts on global warming from 19 countries with a videotaped address to the Global Climate Summit held by Gov. Schwarzenegger in LA this week. But Obama's message went beyond those present, and sent a clear message to world leaders and international negotiators that his administration will take a much more aggressive approach to cutting greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050, and promised a new era of global cooperation on climate change. Speakers at the conference pushed for increasing renewable energy goals and accelerating cuts on polluting emissions. Also this week, a report released by the Public Policy Institute of California finds that despite its leadership on green policies, California is not prepared to deal with the effects of global warming.
    * The Yin and Yang of Yahoo: David Spark, Green 960 Radio
Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang announced that he is stepping down as CEO of the troubled internet company. Stocks initially soared on the news, but then retreated with the uncertainty of future direction and new leadership. For nearly 3 years the Silicon Valley based company has faced turbulent times. Earlier this year it turned down a lucrative buyout offer from Microsoft. Yahoo's advertising revenue has been cut into by more popular social networking sites, while its traditional web portal model has been facing stiff competition from search engine giant Google. The two companies previously considered merging but a potential anti-trust battle with the government caused the deal to fall through. The question remains: Will Yahoo be able to strike a buyout deal with Microsoft or should Yahoo continue to pursue a long-awaited turnaround that few in the industry think the company can pull off? < br />* State Prisons on Trial: Bob Egelko, SF Chronicle
The trial over whether prison overcrowding is responsible for unconstitutional medical and health care began before a panel of 3 federal judges. Attorneys for the inmates are seeking reductions in the state's prison population from its current level of 156,300 to 110,000. If the judges rule against the state, another trial will be held to determine remedies. Federal courts have already found California's prison medical and mental care to be substandard and in some cases so negligent that it contributed to the death of inmates. The state's attorneys argue that numerous factors contribute to the prison healthcare problems besides overcrowding and that reducing the number of inmates is not the solution.
    * Tragic Anniversaries-Jonestown, Milk and Moscone: Rita Williams, KTVU News < br />The anniversaries of tragic events that shook the Bay Area 30 years ago are being remembered this week and next. Many local families had loved ones who were members of the SF-based Peoples Temple and who died in a mass murder-suicide at the Jonestown compound in Guyana. The assassination of Mayor Moscone and SF's first openly gay elected official, Supervisor Milk on November 27th, 1978 shocked the Bay Area and the nation. Milk's life is seen as a catalyst for the gay rights movement. The motion picture "Milk," based on his life, opens next week.

    Washington Week[#4820]
    * President-elect Barack Obama continued his Cabinet-building this week, settling on a couple of Washington insiders and one red-state governor to join his cabinet. Reports say Obama is expected to nominate former Clinton Justice Department official Eric Holder to be Attorney General; former Senate leader Tom Daschle to head up Health and Human Services; and Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano to lead the Department of Homeland Security. What do his choices tell us about the future Obama administration?
    * And another big question is whether Hillary Clinton will join Obama's team as Secretary of State. Plus who will be tapped to head up the Treasury Department, and will the president-elect ask Robert Gates to stay on as Secretary of Defense? We examine Obama's choices and get some answers from a team of reporters covering the Obama transition - Helene Cooper of The New York Times, Ceci Connolly of The Washington Post, and Pete Williams of NBC News.
    * On Capitol Hill the week-long political showdown over what to do to rescue the ailing auto industry ended with an ultimatum. Congressional Democrats told the big 3 automakers today they have less than 2 weeks to come up with a viable plan for the $25 billion emergency loan and present it to Congress. Eamon Javers of Politico updates us on the battle over bailout funds and the future of the US auto industry.

This week, BMJ and Expose: America's Investigative Reports present an investigative story into tragic accidents resulting from natural gas explosions. The report is part of Blueprint America, a PBS-wide series on the nation's infrastructure. "Beneath the North Texas Dirt" follows Brett Shipp, a television reporter from WFAA in Dallas, who discovered that aging equipment connecting homeowners' gaslines to their gas meters was failing, causing horrific explosions. Shipp found evidence suggesting that for decades state regulators and local power companies ignored this fatal problem in the vital infrastructure that brings natural gas into hundreds of thousands of Dallas area homes.
